I get that fabs been around a while, but is there anyway you guys could rejig the forum to be more like one of the popular ones? I'm sure we'll all know the one that begins with "R".

I don't think there is any real patent on the layout and design, and it would massively reduce amount of scrolling done, and therefore save a lot of mobile data.

Thumbs up and a points system would also be great, as opposed to just the most recently updated post being made top.

"I'm happy with the forums as they are but the points thing sounds ok."

The main concern for me is the practically endless scrolling and the inability to nest replies, so filling a train of thought is a lot harder.

Also, I'm sure we've all bumped into the kind of people on here who seem to exist to shitpost or cause contraversy. Having a voting system means no more having to reply 30 replies down with a thumbs up. It cuts down on the scrolling too, and pushes the stupid shit to the bottom.

Aaaand here we have the "I'll be horrible and offensive because I don't like change" crowd.

I guess this is why admin don't often innovate, regardless of how much sense a suggestion makes.

Not really constructive. This is precisely the place to discuss new ideas and offer suggestions to help improve the site. If everyone who didn't like the site just left, then the sound of tumble around here would be deafening!

This is why I brought it up. Criticism isn't evidence of me not liking something in its entirety.

I love the forum's on here because of who is in them, and those people aren't on the other forums she's telling me to go on. What I'm saying is basically, why are we keeping the forum's running in a way which can put off some members by being a little bit convoluted and difficult to read through.

At the very least, having replies to a comment be nested and not instantly visibly unless you want to read further on is a must.

Is that like on Facebook where people can reply to the reply? I know of the R site but haven't used it much.

Bingo. Although I would add that I wouldn't class that as the technical standard to aspire to. This is coming from 20 odd years of using and about 5 years of designing websites. There are other more functional styles of forum but to be honest, Fab is not the worst even if it is on the less sophisticated side.

I think at the end of the day it does a job and it's probably attracting more people than it puts off so from the owner's perspective, there's no major issues here.

It's not that I think technically it's the most feature full, it's just those features seem to provide a really clean and easy UI, and looking for replies to your own comments means scrolling through the entire page, or getting pretty comfortable with the "find in page" button.

However, buried threads can be quite easy to revive on here. This is quite a good thing in some ways, as it doesn't require a great deal of effort to push your thread right back into view, but can annoy some people too.

I understand what you mean. I do a lot of find in page myself!

I've been on other forums that are buttery smooth when it comes to ease of use. These forums have been going for a long time though and I'm sure if the owners were going to upgrade they would have done it by now. Only they can tell you why they haven't.

ETA: I'm guessing it's something to do with cost of server space. That would at least explain every thread ending at 175 posts. I'm guessing that the forum was not the main focus in the beginning although it's a major part of the site for some people now.

I thought that might not fly to just say it, as the admins on here haven't specified whether mentioning other sites is allowed.

And no, it's not a specialised swingers site, but there are swingers on it, albeit not many, and enough non swingers to feel a bit judged. If the forum's in here added a couple of the features tmof that site, it would just be a little easier to keep track of.

You get alerted if someone replies to a thread or comment, and you can go right to the reply.

It's nests replies under each other so you can follow the thread far easier.

It has a scoring system that allows upvotes, so rather than seeing the first person to posts comment, you get a curated idea of the popular opinion based on its number of upvotes and replies.

As mentioned, there are probably much fancier sites out there, but the ease of use on there is something that shouldn't be too difficult to bring to here, and I think a lot of the more active members of the forum would really benefit from it.

You could use 'find on page' if your soul purpose is to read and re-read your posts. I'd of thought most people like to read all replies, other than their own. Each to their own but I'm not a fan of frogs or toads and the sounds they make.

Right. However, we're talking about a major site with a big budget and staff. I get the impression that this site isn't run commercially though.

It's not about reading my own posts, it's a way to confinue down the same train of thought without being disruspted by other random stuff. I'd still read as much as I usually do, I'd just be able to make better sense of it.

The forums are used by maybe 1% of Fab users and that is probably overestimating. More people use the chat rooms daily than the forum.

I can’t see the owners prioritising new features for the forum above the general populace - the photo categorisation feature for example - and even behind chat room changes.

I imagine it would take an overhaul to allow nesting and then add the testing and potential dual running while trying out with live users and it could be quite expensive for no gain

Don't recognize the other site from R.

The forum would probably be better if users didn't need to require a whole post just to stick a thumbs up - it wastes limited bandwidth and thread slots to post in. Perhaps an alternative could be an option. Nested replies could be helpful too.

I honestly don't think this issue is anywhere close to the radar of the site owners. There are "plug and play" forums that you can install with minimal effort. vBulletin would probably be one of the best as it's been around at least as long as I have been on the net and has more exposure than Reddit. Trust me when I say that the reasons are not technical.

I would also add... Although I understand where people are coming from with the idea of a "Thumbs up" button, that I personally think it would reduce the discussions. People would just click the button rather than actually adding a reply, and the number of posts currently where folk gave JUST posted a thumbs up is really next to none.

I'm not keen on the idea that the most popular answer is at the top. I like the thread of the forums as they are. And with the constant popularity contest the forums can be and the white knights jumping to every females defence, it will be the same posters constantly at the top.

"

This is a valid point, however that's exactly why the nested comments is important. If I have the most popular comment for example, all of the comments in reply to my own one no longer fill up the rest of theme thread, as there would be a "view replies" button under my comment, so the next comment below would be another popular comment, and that continues like that.

The benefit is that the people who just want to shit post and purposefully push an unpopular opinion just to be different or difficult, which happens often in here, it stays further down the thread where people are less likely to read, and it puts people off shitpost for the sake of it.
