Distance

Hi,

Seeing as you are working on adding a search by distance feature, would it be possible to add a you are "approx x miles from this person" when you look at a profile?

It doesn't have to be to the mile, but more along the lines of "within 5/10/25/50 miles".

(btw I'm guessing you are using the now free postzon database for all this)

Cheers

free postzon database?????

yes that sounds like a good idea, I use RAC to find out how far I am from someone or where someone is if I don't recognised the place. If it said "you are 50 miles from "profile name", it would mean I wouldn't have to find out as I would know how far they are away and therefore how long

Unfortunately few of us travel by crow!

It would give you a tough guide, but unless you also had a "mode of travel" field, then that's all it would ever be!

Apparently my previous post was deleted, I guess because I linked to a government site, which I thought according to the T&C was ok, but apparently not!

Anyhow Google for "Code-Point® Open" the first hit for the postzon data which is free and gives the longitude/latitude for all uk postcodes. This can then be used to calculate distance as the crow flies.

As for calculating distance as by road/rail, well that isn't going to happen as they are not going to pay the 100k for using the Google api for doing a from to and distance calc (although it is available for free for up to 1000 queries per day). It would also be slower.

Problem is Stunna, if you lived in Ayr, and were willing to travel 40 miles for a meet, which would cover Glasgow and area, that would return places like Grogport (150 miles) , Millhouse (117 miles) and Helensburgh (61 miles). Without a bit of local knowledge it doesn't help!

The above is an example on the Clyde coast, but this will apply to a number of coastal areas (Preston to Rampside 69 miles or Talacre 76 miles). The same would apply in rural areas, a 40 miles trip on a motorway at midnight, on the way back from a meet, is a lot different to trip over the dales.

A useful tool can be found by Googling "freemaptools radius-around-point".

I think it's a great idea and have asked for it myself, as have others. It's used on other swinging sites and most people seem to find it very useful.

Some of the comments above ignore the fact that most people only use it as a guide and don't expect accuracy to the last centimetre, but in the absence of any such information the alternative solutions are less than desirable.

So as a quick and convenient guide I'd say it would be very useful.

As long as they keep the postcode search and the distance search is an addition I am happy with this. POF has the distance search and i find it rather unworkable.
