Hi, there is a big problem at the moment with folks using MSN/hotmail getting their hotmail accounts hacked.

The hackers then cause havoc e.g. they can request your password from Fab, they can login to other sites you're a member of. We've seen around a dozen hacked hotmail accounts over the past few days.

PLEASE if you're using MSN/hotmail be super careful who you add to your friends list on MSN.

Make sure you have up to date anti-virus and anti-malware. And to be honest our recommendation is until this problem is resolved by microsoft, Hotmail/MSN should not be used. Googlemail at least seems secure.

There's some more information about one of the vulnerabilities here:

http://www.thinq.co.uk/2011/5/25/microsoft-error-allowed-hotmail-hack/

Because some of these hackers are asking for MSN addresses via Fab (in order to hack more MSN/hotmail accounts) when we find them the best thing we can do for the safety of everyone else is remove the account. Please CONTACT us privately if this has happened to you.

We are still seeing lots of people getting their msn/hotmail/live accounts hacked

This is another reminder, we'd advice everyone not to use msn/hotmail/live.

never had any viruses or been hacked, and i never used any antivirus or antispyware/firewall.

Simple as: You only get viruses if you install them on your PC yourself.

I do computers repairs/windows reinstalls(due to virueses mostly) in friends computers all the time.

Top tip , before u rush and install anti viruses/anti spywares remember that 90% of them are actually viruses keyloggers themselves and therefore likely to steal your email/bank/sites logins.

how do i know that? get a original Windows dvd, a formated harddrive, never plug it into internet, install windows in it, a clean instalation, install those crappy antispywares like the well known "spybot" etc and voila... u have 40 spywares.... so they say.

bull. how can a computer with clean windows instalation have 40 spywares? ask yourself. all those programs do is spy yourself and open ports on your IP address for hackers to get into your computer. just make sure u dont click banners that say stuff like "your computer is infected, click here to clean it up!" then u click and asks u to download and install something ".exe" well..... people get hacked because they want to.

and im not even going to mention people that open fake emails to fake sites and put their login information in them. like emails that direct you to somethine like www.istealallyourinformation.com/fabs, and u type your fabs login in it.. lol

We are still seeing a trickle of people on msn/hotmail getting their hotmail accounts hacked and other sites broken into from there by password request/reset functions. We'd recommend googlemail which seems more secure.

"is yahoo e.mail safe?"

From what we have seen, googlemail is safer but the main problems we see are with hotmail/msn. We suspect that often the hackers send viruses or malware or something over instant message if you use msn live or whatever it's called.

I had a message from a friend via Facebook, said that my msn account had been hacked, yet I didn't use my hotmail accounts as I have no idea what they are so how does it work when you use another account ie Telewest's blueyonder account?

When I logged in to check, my msn opened with a woman's name and in the status was a link to a strange website (which I didn't click on). I then did as asked and changed my password, set it to change every 72 days. Will this help or not do you reckon?

I have also been getting very strange messages in Japanese to my Outlook inbox (it says in English that its from Japan). Do you think this is linked to the issue with msn?

And I run my antivirus every Saturday morning

Incidentally when I was typing the second paragraph, it came up with the (not sure what they are called) movement bar ie to scroll from left to right then disappeared when I pressed return to type more. This sometimes appears when I reply to messages.

Personally, I would just stay away from Hotmail, whats to say that your password is again secure?

Gmail is prob the most secure, especially as you can now set up 2 click verification (get a code sent to your mobile phone when you use a new PC/Device for the first time.)

Millions use Hotmail without any problems.

Take care when logging into your emails on other computers, amazing how many people forget to untick the remember me box. MSN, Facebook etal all can be used by the next person...

Take care and watch what you do.

Millions do…. but as the nature of this scene means that people often use same usernames/passwords across several adult sites, as soon as one is compromised then all are. Admin have said before, there are more problems with Fab accounts been hacked via hotmail than other email providers.

That says enough to me and so moved to another provider.

Also please remember if you change your hotmail password also change the secret question/answer *and* check for any secondary email addresses associated with it (these can be used if you forget the password and get a new password send to the secondary account).

Also don't use date of birth etc. If you want something easy to remember, pick two words and join them together with some number or random character between them.

Thanks

Yes, I've been getting emails from people in my contacts I've not heard from in years...the viruses are pretty easy to spot.

Yet I did not use a hotmail account to register with msn and I tried to register for a gmail addy but at the time it was solely for American users. Besides I have a blueyonder addy, why have another one, just more log in details to forget

It is because people use msn and perhaps have used the same email addy to register with Fab therefore that is 2 accounts to be hacked, keeps all the little boys busy doesn't it and will stop them messaging those of us only interested in our own age group

people hack all sorts of accounts, not just bank accounts, theres a game online between computer people called hack wars,,waste of space people actually see who can hack the most things in a weekend, and the same with viruses,,virus wars,,its fun to them, and bloody annoying to us

as for email, simple solution have one for swinging and one for rl,,im being over cautious,,we have 4 diff emails,,for each site we are on,,all diff passwords but similar names,,

avast antivirus is one of the best out there,,i work in a pc shop and one of the op said that most of the work he does is on virus and reinstalls,,and i agree, people dont take care of their online selfs near as much as they should,

as for passwords,,theres plenty of programes out there to hack passwords,so keep changing them,,make them complex,,complex isnt secure but itl put your mind at ease,,change it regularly

from what i know, absolutely no mail box, chat account or whatever are 100% secure....msn is the easiest to hack....and after it s just a chain...as soon as one of your box has been hacked, the rest follow, for a simple reason, yu ll always use email box for password and acount name reminder....so, this is valid with yahoo, gmail, msn, skype, etc.....easy to hack and enter in....no need fishing or spyware...just a little bit of personnal research on the net, all the information to access your entire life are on there....that why i do a kind of mirror of everything , with no link between them....double mail box for example, and it work...no prob...;-)

Sadly the biggest source of hacking is the user. What we call in the business a chair/keyboard interface.

Users tend to use the same password and username for their login details for multiple sites. this saves the hassle of having to remember but all it takes is setting up an account on a login harvester site and you have given away your MSN, facebook, yahoo, hotmail etc account details.

I always make my login details unique to the site.
