Forums in public?

Given that the forums are being used to supply the gutter press with details of socials etc (latest being the Alton Towers one), I was wondering if the forums could be hidden from public view... however, it seems that a profile was used to view this forum, so that wouldn't do any good.

Maybe this is a good time to re-visit an idea I, and others, have suggested, in providing event organisers with the facility to have a private list on their profile, which they can also mailshot in one go with details etc.

Perhaps they can initially post in the forums to advertise the event, with a request for people who are interested to mail them, and then when they get the mails, there could be a button on the message to place it in the "private" list if the organisers deem that the profile meets the required criteria for inclusion?

The organisers can then also mailshot the list with details, directions etc in one go, without having to "copy n paste" dozens and dozens of times.

And what stops a journalist from setting up and maintaining a profile?

Horse bolted - shutting the gate now is pointless!

Gutter press have had profiles here longer than most of the genuine members.

Nothing, and, as you will see in my OP, I recognise the fact that the Alton Towers info was accessed by a profile, meaning a reporter is masquerading as a swinger.

However, if event organisers are sensible in how they vet profiles, who they put on their lists and give out info to, then perhaps reporters will get bored of coming up against a brick wall and sod off somewhere else.

Event organisers are normally pretty savvy and do all the things you are suggesting already. The only difference is the option to send mail to all.

The difference between this and other socials was it is a well known theme park. It was probably not wise to actually mention which theme park it was and technically should have been removed as it is a location, but then mailing people who asked about it instead could have ended up in a reporters mailbox as people would probably need to know where it was before deciding.

Having just one post on a thread advertising an event, with as little info as possible, inviting people to mail the organiser for further details, and requesting that they do not fill the thread with the sort of comments which would attract attention and be fodder for the reporters would surely be an improvement, and the mailshot option would be great.... two birds, one stone?

I've only just started organising socials but I only relis the date. All other details are inboxed to guests 24hrs before. Althogh this doesn't prevent the problem I hope it helps. Xxx

My view is it won't stay with no other posts on it unless it was closed as soon as it was posted, then it wouldn't be highlighted much as it would drop down the list very quick.

You are in the right place for Admin to see your suggestion though and they are the ones who decide
