Online status: browser v. mobile App

This may seem a silly question, but mobile app users often appear online frequently. Does this mean they are actually browsing the site?

I wondered if they might show as online anytime they use their phone and the app communicates?

If this is the case, is there a way to use the app/phone and not show yourself as online on fab?

One impact of this is that showing online automatically bumps you up search results and lists. Giving mobile users preferential status - even over site supporters.

I'd like to know what phone activity causes you to show as being online.

It might be different depending if you are IOS or Android...

I don't know for sure, but I would imagine the online status shows people who have been active within the last 5 mins. So if you load any page, whether it's iOS, android or even desktop, then you show as being online.

You Dont Need to Know, right now

I read on another thread that the 'appear online' indicator only appears, if you are ACTIVELY clicking on Fab pages. If you're merely logged on but not looking at Fab, the online-indicator vanishes after a few minutes.

I think that is the case for a web browser either on phone or PC, but it's the actual App I think might show you online because the app is running in the background??

We use iOS and it shows us being online even if we gave closed the page, we have to actively log out, I do find I often have to say to people that if we look like we are online then that's not always the case, as I am aware it may appear rude not reading messages if it would seem we are online Mrs blue eyes

That sounds like what I've noticed.

Might be just iOS phones.

It is quite confusing for everyone thinking you're online, but you aren't really. People think you're ignoring them.

i know my phone doesn't do this because every time i come onto fab the bookmarked page is my hotlist (and i'm on it and can see when i was last online).

i don't stay logged in.

so there, more confusion.

I often get accused of being online when I am not; if you have the programme running in the background but your not using your mobile phone, ie the phone shuts down but the page is still open, how long for it show you are online still, thanks

As it isn't an app it's very unlikely that your phone is reporting you as online unless the web page is active on your phones browser.

I think it takes about 5 minutes to update and would then show you as offline however it depends on the cache of the other person as to what they see. So you can appear online a good while after you aren't

It’s so confusing as literally it shows as online when I’m not, I know others say the same

Basically if you click out if your phone but you have the programme running in the background it shows you as online for about 5 mins, have I got that right?

.

There is no program/app. It's just a webpage viewed in your phone's browser.

If you keep the app signed in but aren't actively using it, as I understand, it works on a timeout principle of marking you as offline if you've been inactive for a given period of time
