Being nice to newbies

I was wondering if anyone could come up with any suggestions as to how we give new members (and I'm talking mostly single women and couples) a better experience of their first week or two on fab.

The feedback I get from most of them is that they aren't just innundated with messages, they aren't just bombarded, but they are so completely overwhelmed to the extent that a lot of them really don't get a chance to relax and enjoy it - clearing out the inbox becomes a chore rather than a giggle. And they just get hacked off and leave.

I was thinking - for the first week or two at least - have a (optional?) limit to the number of unread mails that a new member can have in their inbox at any one time - perhaps overridden for people that they are actively conversing with.

any other suggestions?

am I talking shite?

We should probably make them more aware of message filters

Until we manage to educate the folks who are sending all the messages into having a more tolerant attitude towards the time it takes for new folk to work their way through the messages they'll inevitably attract it's going to be an uphill struggle.

Maybe something along the lines of 'you can't message someone again within 24/ 48 hours unless you've had a reply from them'.

The coding would be difficult but it'd stop a lot of the 'why haven't you answered my message' traffic.

We was here for fookin' months before anyone wrote to us, or even answered any of our emails.

"We should probably make them more aware of message filters

www.fabswingers.com/my/filters"

That would be a start, but I'd wager that even with all of the filters that might be appropriate for a particular member activated, there's a large volume of members ready and waiting to blast out 50 copies of their favourite copy and paste message to everyone on the new members list and follow it up with 3 or 4 "why haven't you replied?" messages on an hourly basis.

(good suggestion btw AV)

perhaps just do away with the new members list altogether and only show new members on the local updates page?

well yes - despite what I said in the OP, there might perhaps be something to be said for the survival of the fittest approach

ban members that copy paste same message to 100+ members on the same day without reading a single profile

"ban members that copy paste same message to 100+ members on the same day without reading a single profile"

seems a bit extreme, and how would anyone tell without the site owners snooping on message content?

Not really a world I would like to live in - how about you?

I did like AV's idea - a 48 hour block on doing follow-up mail to an unreplied email. Perhaps with a message that pops us saying something like:

"You have already sent a message to this member within the last XX hours and they haven't replied - You can message them again in YY hours if you wish but sending another message so soon will decrease, not increase your chances of success, in the meantime why not see if you can improve your chances by putting up some better photos or read our guide to writing a better profile"
