I think it's fine as it is. If I want to see what friends are online then I will click my friends list.
Anything more would be a bit stalkerish.
And to be honest, I wish we had a option to 'appear offline'  |

the appear offline thing is also a good idea, I was just thinking along the lines of an icon (blue dot thing would be good) that would appear next to your status or somewhere on the fabswingers banner to let you know that one or some of your friends were online and you could then click on your friends list to see which one.  |
