I think it's a random thing, making sure that we are real people, not bots. I had it once, but it isn't usually there.

It could be a sign somebody has been trying to hack your account . I changed my password but had clean forgotten that I had done so .I think on the third or fourth attempt to log on with in with the incorrect password I was presented with the verification code challenge
