I wonder if a friendly warning would have served in the 1st instance rather than a ban ? yes rules are rules we all agree on that one, but personally I think a warning would probably have done the trick.. if the rule was broken a 2nd time, then fair enough - ban
Just my take on it, and by no means a slur on the moderator concerned |

maybe a warning would have been better but the that being said everyone should read the rules befor going into chat so there is no reason for anyone breaking the rules really.i feel there are to many people pushing the rules so to speak knowing they will get away with it once or twice.
i think that making people agree to the rules befor going into with a tick box or the like would be a good idea then no one can say i didn t no |

Was just gonna say that
when did posting an email address become against the rules? If it is then perhaps it being added to the rules would help people, especially if you get a ban for it. |

Your probably right in that’s where the confusion comes in, but an email address is not a web address, but its pretty obvious they rules should be clear if it merits a ban.
Always thought the rules in chat were a bit strange anyway, when it comes to things like phone numbers etc, when you can post them freely all over the rest of the site where non members can see them, at least in chat its only members that can view them.

Well we have to agree, something we'd not noticed, but yes an email address and a web address are 2 different things, so maybe the rules need to be clarified.
Either way I'd have issued a warning to that person not a ban ... but different mods - different perspectives on a situation hey ho |

i am sorry but if you check the rules you find they say "To protect our users from spam, we now have a simple rule. Don't post any web addresses at all in chat". we have email the site owners they have told use that this means email addys to

A web address is the address of a web site and an email address is exactly what it says .... thus 2 different things
The rules need to be clear and definitive - therefore it should state that it is against the rules to post any address, be it web, email or other. cannot argue with that really.
Either way, I'd still give a warning before I banned. I think it is called benefit of the doubt. Yes ?

Thanks _arryandlil for the info, its just not clear in the rules, it should mention no email address’s so not to confuse anyone.
Still don’t get this bit though “To protect our users from spam” when its perfectly ok to post them on your profile which more people can see.

LarryandLil, no disrespect meant here, but maybe you need to email the site owners again and ask what action they'd take if someone using the chat rooms inadvertently broke the rules one time.... Would they issue a summary ban, or a friendly warning ......
In the pit of my stomach, I have a feeling that I know what the answer would be ..... but why not ask them and enlighten me with their response ? |

Personally if you give 2 x warning then ban on the 3rd time, I'd say that is a perfectly reasonable way behave - it's the summary banning without warning that really gets my goat - I've often wondered what the fixation has been in the past with ban ban ban, mods only need to remember that people are human, they do make mistakes, and if those mistakes are pointed out, then the chances are that the member will take it on board and that will be an end to it, if they don't, then of course further action is then warranted - |

Forum Mod Totteridge/Whetstone |
We'll fix the chat rules next week so that mods and users know where they stand.
All chat bans are temporary when issued in the room, 1hr for directing 4hrs for other stuff.
We can issue permanent bans to regular rule breakers or people who are being abusive or spamming on purpose. |
