It is not a major issue but I do not think that the "Reply Privately" link when posting to a forum message is a useful facility. I may be interested enough in a post to respond but it does encourage personal messages from people in whom I have no interest. |

I have found it to be a good feature. When I posted on a debate in the forum I received a message from a guy who thanked me for my kind word that I'd posted in reply to him on the thread. This lead to a short, friendly conversation after which we wished each othere well and moved on.
If you're getting unwanted attention, it may be that you need to set your filters accordingly |

Fair enough. I have seen forum posts saying, "Why did you message me privately," so I may not be alone in considering it a nuisance factor. |

I think it's a great feature, you may want to reply with something you don't mind sharing with that person but not the whole site. For example, sometimes someone will ask about bdsm, if I reply publicly I get messages from men 'volunteering' themselves to be one of my subs. Whereas if I reply privately I don't. That person I'm replying to have the choice to respond however they feel is appropriate. |

I agree, why be rude to someone for using one of the sites features ? Even if they have been rude no need to stoop to their level, just ignore or report if abusive. |

Personally I think it should stay as its a good way of linking the forum post to a comment you might want to make but don't want to or think it appropriate to post it on the forums.
And as someone has already said, if someone wants to message you regarding the post, they could just send a private message so I don't see the need to remove the 'reply privately' link |

For some reason unknown to me, there seems to be great pride in being rude...if they were abusive to you?..agreed, block or ignore and retain dignity. |

Sometimes you see a comment that strikes a chord, an observation that warrants further discussion outside the realm of the forum. Sometimes people want to offer support privately.
Granted it completely bypasses the profile so if you do not have filters you will get messages from those who don't meet your profile criteria.
Unfortunately, the same person can just click on your profile and message anyway. In the heat ofvthe moment are you going to stop to read a profile?
I appreciate that some people are that trigger happy that a comment that is not negative will be seen as a positive and they will pounce anyway, removing the option to reply from the thread won't change that.
But thats just my opinion. |

sometimes the private messages are rude offensive and they wont say it in the main forum...
yep its not big or clever but sometimes a taste if there own medicine can show them how nasty they was.
but this was prior my bet so im now trying "if I cant say nothing nice dont say nothing" |

I've had some great chats with people on the Forums [that are within my filters] including yourself Mr Marmite. If people use the contact button then you can see straight away why they're messaging you. I don't see the problem with that. |

I wonder if there could be a button when you post to the forum that says "disable private replies" that would add a disclaimer to your post to inform people of such. It would discourage but not prevent people from contacting you if they were intent on it but would also mean you wouldn't have to set your filters so tight that nobody could ever message you.
