Anyone else feel maybe new members should only be contactable by verified/site supporters/photo verified members for the first week or so of joining? Seem to be so many join and then get frightened off by idiots?

There are plenty of idiots with verifications on the site, and quite a few decent people without them. Verifications are at best a guideline, not a panacea, and plenty of people treat them like notches on the bedpost. |

There already are a number of restrictions on who can contact newbies.

We're not sure this is the case. It simply isn't for everyone.
