There seem to be quite a few people who create profiles on this site who put little or no information at all in their profile text. There are also quite a few profiles on here that have been created for several months that only say things like "will update soon". Could it be possible to enforce a minimal number of characters in the profile text field on all new people joining, and for those that have joined set a time limit for an update. A suggestion of about 250 characters might seem a little much but when you break it down that is only about 50 to 60 words including spaces and grammar. We are sure that everyons can find that much to say something about themselves and what they are looking for.
And another thought about profile texts, would it be possible to do a search and replace of all the warning texts included in some profiles with the message "Stop Using Warnings".

I'm delighted to be able to confirm that, despite what it says on my profile, I have absolutely no plans to update it any time soon. |

I dare so you could enforce a minimum no. of characters per profile, but then you'll get someone filling their profile with
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz1234567890oeutryhwfkjnvasnfgsvsnxn,,
Or similar
The secret being, if you look at the profile and don't like what it contains - move on till you find one that you do like .....

Check profile, nothing there of interest, lets move on.
Check profile, something there of interest, lets consider getting in touch.

Note that when a user reports a profile, there is a box to tick that says "profile incomplete" so one assumes that admin dont like these profiles either.....

I think my profile stinks. I wrote it simply to join and haven't updated it since I decided to stay. Just haven't needed to.
I was about to object to the 250 demand when I cut n pasted mine into word and it's 279 characters long!
So Yeah ... I'll back this one. Fnarr! |

I think free profile length is a great thing.
Anyone who can't think of more than a sentence to write about themselves is highly likely to have the intellectual capacity of a potato and therefore be highly unlikely to hold our attention for longer than a nanosecond in a real-life meet situation.
We've got no interest in people with nothing to say, so people with really crap profiles help us to assess and dismiss them almost instantly which saves us loads of time looking for the sort we would like to spend our time with |
