The site seems to show a user as 'online' in many different ways as depending on whether you're on their profile, the search page, or your hotlist, it gives a wildly different figure for when they were last online.
Sometimes you'll look in one place and you see the blue dot, and somewhere else it says online 2 hours ago.
I know that detecting if a user is online can be difficult even when they're using an app (which they're not) but I think some consistency would be nice.
I only really tend to message user when they're online otherwise I get buried in their inbox, not sure about others, but for me this would be really helpful. |

Many people would much prefer if that information was hidden so that they didn't get messages every time they are online.
I've never been that invested to check when someone was last online but lots of women have said in various threads that they would like the blue dot removed completely because they find it the most annoying part of the site and would like to be able to browse the site in peace. |

This is why id love to be able to show as offline... if everyone thinks like you and only messages when they show online your message will still be lost in a busy inbox |

Well the user search is based on who's most recently online so this is very much a part of the design of the site.
I do agree that being able to show as offline would be a good feature though!
I just think the way it's implemented is confusing and makes it difficult to have a proper conversation since you message a friend for a meet thinking they're online and they've closed the site two hours ago. |

Ofcourse, it's always nice to have a message read and replied too. Let alone hive a crap if they are online.
It's nice to know if people have been offline for longer periods.
Personally I think it's a better use of resources to automatically remove from any searches if a person has been offline longer than a week. |

I'd love to set our profile to offline sometimes.
Being hassled shows the desperate impatient ones which is a bonus but it gets annoying when asked are we ignoring people. No, we're in the forum at silly o'clock or generally perving around.
Swings and roundabouts. It would be good to have the option.
All the joys of fab

It's so presumptuous of men to assume that if a woman is online then it indicates it's convenient for her to read and reply to an instant message. I have been out with playmates when they have gone online to show me something and it's absurd watching the unread message count ticking upwards during the online period .I know why of course . It's a presumption that you might stand a better chance of getting a reply . In practice it's nothing of the sort. |
