Before the rules on links on forums were a bit confusing (most were simply removed).
We're making clearer. We have these rules to stop people linking to harmful places and to stop spam.
You CAN link to:
Any well recognised news site (bbc, times, telegraph, sun, notw, cnn and all the rest)
Youtube
Lovehoney
You can't link anywhere else.
If we see other trusted sites that are OK to link to we'll add them here.
Hope this sounds fair, comments in the thread please.

Well, you buy the site, then you can allow everyone to advertise freely on your site, after all, it wont cost you any money to buy and keep the site running will it?. |

Can I ask about charity sites, like just giving? I am running race for life and few of the peeps in chat have said they'd like to sponsor me. Rather than mailing them individually I was wondering if I could post a link to my just giving page?
Thanks

Having read the above - is it true that we can't we link to swingers club sites that are already linked in the fabswingers clubs guide, as we would appear to break the sites rules even though the site links those clubs alrady?
Also in all fairness why can't we link to *any* sites which are non profit making?

The funniest thing that I saw was someone posting a non approved link on here ! the very thread which tells them what they can and cannot post
It's gone now though |

What happened to my question about links to google search results? They are fine as they are not going to be malware.
Or did it get deleted? I'm sure I didn't delete it....
hmmm
is it really to stop people copy pasting and going to a dodgy site? If so I'd expect them to have some AV software installed (avast is free and stops bad sites).
Tiny Url obviously should not be allowed either as it obscures where you are really going.
*wonders if the magic pixies are going to make this one disappear too* |

That might be mine, however the original post does say list others on here that are safe. I was just querying if google/google search results link was ok. but appears oh no magic ponies may get out and destroy the world |

As redhot says, a bit ironic posting links on a thread that is telling you not to post links.
Just mention the actual name of the link you want added and Admin will answer yes or no when they see it. |

"[Removed by poster at 01/01/11 20:19:50]
You assumed wrong "
What really? there are simple code examples to detect and extract urls from text and then you can use a url object to figure out the domain etc.
Like an hours work at most (google for "asp.net extract link from text"), not much harder in php either.

"* bangs head against brick wall *"
I'll join you!
I made the assumption this forum was for raising items and querying things, but apparently I can't give an example of what I'm trying to query!
So you have to tell someone to "Google for 'ponies'", but for more complex things it would have been handy to pre-load the query for them.
But hey ho never mind, just means I'll be less helpful, as can't link to google results/ an image explaining something or whatever.

Rugby, your gonna have one hell of a bump on your head at this rate.
My understanding is that the site ownwers only want you to link to certain places and that's it !
Seems easily understood from where I'm sitting |

Well I can't understand why the whitelist has bbc and youtube but not google(even though youtube *is* google now).
Perhaps it's my technical background which can't quite understand what's going on. After all a youtube link can contain malware, or any site link for that matter if they have an ad provider.
*shrugs*

Because thats what the site owners say.
It's their site and it's up to them.
If the said that you could only link To Black Betty's Black Pudding Emporium . com then that would be all you could link to.
I really don't see the problem. That's what the rules state, tech background or no tech background, they apply to all |

That's fine but this thread *appeared* to my eyes to ask questions is it ok to xyz. Since people have above. I just asked it in a different way. |

Unless my eyes deceive me, there is a list on the opening post of what can be linked to.
I haven't noticed Google listed, but in any case you cannot click through to a link from the forum, it has to be copied and pasted into your browser |

Just wondered, following on from an earlier spat that I had on an different thread tonight after a member posted a link to a club .....
Whats the protocol with regard to posting links to clubs ?? Is it ok if they have been already posted on the club forum? Do they have to remain soley in the club forum or have they received the green light to be posted elswhere on the site as well ?
Either way, the rules could perhaps be clarified on this issue |

To clarify: Only links on that list can be posted.

"I guess that could always be solved by if everyone paid on the site, the site wouldn't have to have links to other sites to generate income to pay for the the costs they incur
"
totally agree, make it a pay site, its already as good as any pay sites we have found |

"just wondering if site owners would have a look for a site we can use to upload movies too , that we can share ...
if they picked one site we all can use abit like a adult version of youtube then we can all share videos
and put links to them on our profiles ect "
do you mean a link to a site where you have uploaded your own videos !! |

"SJ....can dictionary links be allowed?"
We'll review the list towards the end of the year and if there's a good case for adding new links we'll add them - but we don't want to have more than a dozen or so allowed otherwise it's hard to moderate.
Until then the priority is stopping posting of unsafe links and spam so the default answer to all these types of questions is "no" unless Admin says otherwise

there should be a new thread made of this with the list sites that are ok to post, and closed by admin and keep adding sites when another one is being added to the list, im not sure if the softwear the site use's can do this but on another site admin can pick threads to always be kept to the top of the page like FAQ thread i think this would be very handy for this site if admin can do it |

"If forums aren't allowed, are links within messages to friends? I won't do it until I hear the offical admin view on the matter.
thanks
chris"
If you're just sending a personal, private, non-commercial link to someone you've already been in touch with rather than spamming en-masse I'm sure that will be fine.

While we are on the subject of links, would it be acceptable at some point in the future to include links to official government websites? (.Gov.org)
I ask this because we often have questions from members looking for official type info on subjects in the forums.
Thanks. |

"How about ac.uk? Academic websites such as universities.
I'm bumping this because I think it's a good idea and clarification would help.
Any thoughts yet? "
Academic sites and professional journals - which could be thought of as equivalent to established news sites - is a good idea. |
