Deleting messages

When you delete a message/s, if that person then messages you again all previous messages appear. Surely when you delete any message it should delete permanently! Have i missed a facility for this to happen?

I think over time it disappears because I've deleted messages then come across those be chatted with and can't remember so send one receive reply but all past gone and only recent
