Forum in need of an update?

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

Hi good evening/morning boys & girls.

Does anyone else think this forum could use an update a bit like FB? I for one think...

A. It would be good to get notified if anyone reply’s to your posts. I can’t be bothered wading back through tonnes of posts to see if anyone responded to a comment I posted days ago.

B. Like/Dislike buttons.

This forum has an awesome following with lots of cool, fun people in it. I just think the technology is there to make it an even better experience.

Your thoughts?

I don't want to know if people reply to my posts. It's a marketing tool designed to keep you online, right?

If I'm here then I'll see, if not then it's cool

Yeah, it needs a revamp. It's like something I'd teach the kids how to create for New Clait back in the early 2000s.

It would be cool to post pics too. Funny stuff etc not just porn.

FB is very popular for a reason. The techno guy is there - even in boring old “bow forums” that I follow that are also not for profit.

I'd prefer to see post likes, than multiple long reposts, just to say it. More efficient.

But otherwise, keep it unlike fb

Ok so people prefer the immediate and temporary rather than sustaining deep and meaningful conversations.

Ok fair one, just thought I’d ask.

Thanks

Somewhere near here

I like the simplicity of it. Be easier to post phone emojis rather than codes and be nice to share pictures but then it’ll probably become a sausage fest,

I don't personally want forum posts to be liked or disliked. It would become a popularity thing very quickly, and I come here to get away from that.

The Forum is a tiny aspect of the site with a minuscule proportion of users on it. It isn’t a selling point for why the vast majority of people join, use and remain here.

To invest the resources to justify further improvements in the forum would only make sense if they were to charge extra for use of it. Rather than do that, they allow users to join for free and curtail only basic privileges that paid members of the site have access to.

I think the inclusiveness of that justifies their keeping the Functions at an acceptable, albeit outdated level, especially at the price of their subscriptions with no intrusive advertising.

I can’t compare it to other social media platforms because I don’t use anything else but I would presume that advertising is rife on those sites if they’re offered free of subscription.

Gifs take up a lot of space and space can cost a lot of money. So it is easy to understand.

I like the simplicity of Fab, and the fact it doesn’t change much at all.

I know that means it seems dated and lacking in features to some, but it doesn’t bother me.

It would be utter bollocks anyway - an attractive person would say in very basic English a point raised by someone else above and get loads of likes. It's a sex site, driven by the desire to have sex.

This is thd only online forum I really use so perhaps my frame of reference is not great but I don't see an issue with it.

It's easy to use and navigate. Threads are readable, more so than if they were scattered with 'hunerous' gifs. I just don't understand what any other functionality would bring to the party?

Also.... I thought there were push notifications that could be turned on. Not sure if it's just for messages or includes forum posts though?

Agreed.

I think that it would be great to have a way to approve or like a post, as that would stop so many folks feeling overlooked. It would be massively abused though, so unless there’s a way to effectively do it, it’s pointless.

No, it doesn’t need an update, the only thing I would possibly like would be an edit button, so you had a few minutes to change any mistakes. But I don’t want to see gifs or memes, (I’m not a fan of emojis as it is) because they will replace original thought and dumb the lounge down even further. I don’t think likes would be good either cause like Kitty said it turns a thread into a popularity contest, then you’ll have people getting upset and sulking even more, theres enough competition on hot pics, we don’t need it on here. Some things are best left alone.

All of these points are moot anyway. The site isn’t going to improve the functionality of the forums, simply because it doesn’t bring anything to the site.

Of the tens of thousands that use the site, a tiny fraction or so use the forums on a regular basis, we’re not using the site for the function that it was intended, they won’t do anything to change the site for our interest unless it aligns with theirs.

There and to the left a bit

If it ain't broke don't fix it is my thought here and for me it ain't broke - yes it's basic but it serves it's purpose.

The functionality to easily see if someone has replied to your post is already there within your browser OP - the "find" function just use it to search for key words in your post or even hit the "my last reply" button and scroll down from there.

Likes/dislikes while I can see where you're coming from would become a popularity contest and nothing more - especially as you'd get blokes falling over themselves to "like" anything a hot woman would say in the hope of getting noticed.

Gifs/pics would just take up more server space (at a cost!!) and become something else you had to scroll past - not to mention the added overhead of monitoring them to ensure they met site rules etc.

I could go on, and yes there are enhancements that could be made but personally I don't think they're necessary.

Anything else will clutter it up and make it hard work; just like Facebook.

And, just like Facebook, I would pop on, get sick of scrolling and go and play Angry Birds.

This might sound a bit snobbish, and I really don’t mean to be!

I do wonder if it had all the bells and whistles, whether it might draw in more people who don’t see the “community” side of Fab.

The fact it’s not flashy is good in a way - it means words are important, and there’s fewer distractions. Maybe it’s a little easier to get a sense of what people are about?

Could just be me, of course!

I’m a happier user of social media and other forums, so I don’t think I’m completely old-fashioned!

An actual list of banned words would be nice instead of some sort of lucky dip to find out that perfectly normal words used in converstaion are banned

An actual list of allowed websites to link to instead of the use of "large news websites ect" which should never be used in any statement of a rule in the firstplace as its so non-specific. Who decides what is a llrge news site for one? And is that only Mainstream news or news on any other subject? Being linked to malware is a bit silly as if i wanted to and had the skill set i could use Youtube to spread Malware, but YT is allowed.

Plus instead of a stupid Ban for posting links to science journal, how about just deleting the post and explaining why to the poster

Why, oh why do most people seem to regard FB as the base foundation for everything else to follow?

This site follows a format that's been in operation in its own way for my 12 years here. The one great aspect for me, and I suspect others too, is the simplicity of how this site works!

Yes, it has its flaws, but for it still works.

In comparison, FB to me is hugely complex and one almost needs a Degree to operate it. I use very little of its operational options as I simply don't understand it.

For those that want to mix in FB stuff on here, all I ask, is why? If you want FB equivalents, stick with FB.

I'm sure being able to say 'like' to a post instead of having to add and taking up one of the 175 spaces isn't that complicated

You can’t get your dick wet on FB and call it “swinging” though , can you? I don’t use FB, but it’s fair to say that for all it’s pros (and there are many), as a platform it really sucks arse. The suggestions are nothing to do with FB per se - I think the functionality being requested here is fairly standard and designed to enhance engagement and inclusiveness.
