Varies depending on how old the messages are, when you last logged on etc.
If you've not logged on for 50 days the messages will often be removed.
We'd love to keep everyone's messages all of the time but since we run this on a shoestring and over 500k messages are exchanged daily, we try to keep on top.
If you're a site supporter and "save" a message to your "saved" folder it'll never be deleted.
