We're testing the new search page. Rather than the generally agreed to be stupid region/postcode-letter, it now searches proximity (for UK users who have entered postcode info).
You can try it with the following link:
http://www.fabswingers.com/browse/advanced_geo
So you can search for people within a distance of first half of postcode (e.g. N12) or a town/city name (Kettering).
When we're happy it is ok, this will replace Search and Advanced Search

"We searched for people 5 to 10 miles away and had Stroud people come up in our search, that's 20 miles from us.
"
Depends on what postcode people are using. Many people may live in a small and easily identified village and use that postcode but put the nearest close town for example.

Not sure we want people to know we are close to them, it's a small village here so we could be easily 'findable'.
Can we opt out or do we have to put in a bogus postcode to hide where we are? |

You could put in the a nearby postcode
Or we could change the bandings from five mile minimum to within ten miles

a great deal better with far more results .as for feedback the only problem at the momment would be the distances in time are far from correct . ie in 10 to fifteen away we get two locations . one is just over an hour the other is 25 mins . other locations also showing much closer than they are . wonders if fab could borrow the aa route planner software |

"should have said miles lol . ipswich is 52 miles ,comes up as 10 to 15 . "
Depends on the postcode the user has used, they may say Ipswich as their location but live in a small village closer to you.
All distances are as the crow flies.

A brilliant improvement, well done.
As a further suggestion, the results at the moment (as with all searches) are ordered by last login time. With this distance search, is it also possible to order the results by distance? Appreciate it could be tricky to combine the two - maybe give an option how users want them displayed?
Keep up the good work. |

"don't get me wrong this is a great improvement as a useful search but would it be possible then to have as the car drives instead of as the crow flies lol "
Just add 10 miles for every 20 will be about right.

This would require a "logged in since" option too otherwise you'll end up with very close people who haven't logged in, in an age.
Probably best bet if you're looking for people closer is to re-run the search with a tighter distance. We'll be adding links to make this easier on searches shortly e.g. Get more results with more distance or vice-versa.

Thanks admins and staff its a great idea yes there will be a few errors as its dependent on what individual members decide to state as their location but certainky helps in planning the distances and time you need to travel for meets
one other addition i would like to see is a search for sexual preferences added
and also would be nice to be able to see which chat room a member was in
rather than searching for hours lol
well done admins its you guys that make this such a great site |

curious; why on a location based search would you want to know which chat room someone is in?? |
