Simply add to the end of the '# unread' text on the new mail text something like: '10 unread (4 known)'. That means four mails have arrived from people on your friend list or hotlist thus you know you should definately check mail

Sounds like an idea, but I tend to find that if I open my inbox and look, it has the same effect
