"Has anybody else received an email from Hellfire complete with dozens of others personal email addresses attached to it?? Pretty sure this is against GDPR!!"
I would complain directly and very formally to the club.
And probably report....
VERY unprofessional.
I was considering a visit too. I think not now.... |

Re CC email:
We inadvertently sent 165 email addresses via CC; I have sent an apology to each and asked all to delete the email. The total send was 8000 of which, 165 were dropped inadvertently into cc as opposed to bcc.
I sincerely apologize.

You have a legal responsibility to make the ICO aware within 72 hours of the breach. |

From receiving messages from a dodgy couple who attend Hellfire to slate other clubs to now a quite clear breach of GDPR (which I am fully aware of, it’s part of my job) I’m quite pleased and relieved that I am and will not be a member of this club.
This is a serious breach, shocking to say the least! |

Cut the club some slack. It is a very poor data breach - inexcusable but mistakes do happen.
There is no indication that it was deliberate. Maybe a bit of compassion as we’ve all sent some sort of email / text message by mistake.
I assume it is a small run business and hasn’t got IT departments, legal teams and HR etc.
Very good of the club to publicly apologise |

They have apologised and taken steps to minimise the damage by asking recipients to delete the email.
What else do you want them to do?
I doubt they run a high profit business where they can offer everybody financial compensation.
Well done hell fire club for holding your hands up and apologising. Many would have spun it with a jackanory story. |

I like the club's response.
No fluff. No excuses. No miss direction.
Fingers crossed there's no damage done to the recipients or to the club. |

"We have asked for the email to be deleted by all recipients and I have self reported to the ICO and will await their response. "
You may be able to recall unread emails too.
The recipient has to allow the recall, but that may help.
I'm sure Outlook has the recall facility. Don't know about other carriers of course. |

Sorry, the size if the business (that’s what it is, not some private party) does not exempt statutory responsibilities. Would you ‘cut some slack’ if they forgot to get their fire extinguishers checked? They wont get closed down, they may get a slap on the wrist. Discretion should be a minimum requirement for a swingers club |

I’m saying cut them some slack in terms of understanding and perhaps forgiveness if you feel strongly about the data breach. I’m not saying the club are are exempt from their statutory responsibilities.
So far the club have:
1) publicly apologised
2) minimised damage by asking recipients to delete email
3) self referred to ICO
4) admitted that it was an honest excuse
What more can they do? |

The club hasn't tried to shirk their statutory responsibilities.
In fact exactly the opposite.
They've admitted the error, apologised and are self reporting to the relevant body.
That they're not hiding or obfuscating is to their credit.
It's clearly an error, unfortunate, embarrassing. But not malicious.
Mistakes happen.

Minimised damage?? By sharing personal email addresses and breaking trust of its members? Confidentiality and trust are at the heart of swinging so no, not good enough. If my email had been on that list there would be hell to pay! |

Well I guess they could outline what procedures or technology solutions they now intend to implement to ensure finger trouble doesn’t happen again.

I tend to agree. They have done everything they can to limit the damage and respect to them for owning the mistake and not denying it.
That said there isnt a member on this site that wouldn't be absolutely fucking furious if they discovered their email address had been shared with 150+ random swingers because there is a massive scope for mischief and malice |

It was another club and funnily enough, nothing terrible ever came of it.

If i go through a red light and admit it, give an abject apology, i may still get a reprimand or fine. That’s life, if you set up a business then there are responsibilities - thats all. No hanging required.
Now if as a result of that momentary lapse there is a car crash, what then? |

Leaks happen
Child benefit left my details unsecured a few years ago. Name, DOB, address, phone number, ni, bank details and details of my little ones.
The gov just posted names, emails, home addresses online
Things happen.
I keep a separate email address for swing or kink. That way I take personal responsibility. Email addresses are free. It doesn't get linked to my real Name, DOB or home address.
The club apologised; accepted responsibility and it was only email address to other swingers.
I'm Sorry to all those affected. Is this thread really the right place for your outrage? |

The point is that the club are not looking to avoid a reprimand or shirk from their responsibilities. They have self referred themselves to the information commissioners office who will take the appropriate action. |

Good on them, some people seem to think its no biggy. If a club wants to keep a record of its members then it has a responsibility to safeguard that info, its a biggy. |

There will always be someone who won't but for most I would imagine would not abuse the situation
Obviously it is not a good thing for it to happen but if the E-mail doesn't give away who the people are, ie not traceable to their address etc then it is just an E-mail address

For those complaining vehemently about this unfortunate mistake, I can sympathise but it’s a mistake that has been acknowledged, dealt with and apologised for.
There are many ‘data breaches’ every year where details for varied companies and institutions get released into the real world. It happens. Providing it’s dealt with properly, then it’s fine.
To avoid visiting a club because they made a mistake, one that probably doesn’t even affect you, is overly harsh and not the type of behaviour that helps such a niche sector as the swinging world.
If you don’t go to the club, it’s sadly your loss, it’s a very friendly and comfortable place to attend.
No, we’re not affiliated to the club
We’re just members and enjoy the venue.
It could’ve been our emails on the list and we’d have dealt with it.
Would you boycott your bank, Facebook, eBay etc. who’ve all had much bigger breaches.?
Just announce of compassion please for someone who puts a lot into our world for not much return.

Without belittling the impact of this I think we need to appreciate that so far as data breaches go this is as benign as it gets. (Unless the Sun was on the mailing list).
I am hoping that everyone on that list respect each other's privacy and that there is zero damage done. |

Guess what he got my address from and email through the IP address of the email I sent. My whole family found out what things I got up to. The whole thing was very upsetting. So for those of you who think this is not serious I just hope nothing bad comes of this. Pleased I'm not a member |

Friends of mine were on the breached list. Their concern are:
1) emails can be traced with a public tracing website and releases a lot of data about the persons location, identity and how their email account is used. All for free.
2) why does an organisation use BCC when a mass email account is about £50 a month.
3) they never gave the club permission to use their email address.
Double breach. |

It would be quite funny were it not for the fact that she is in Zimbabwe and that means all emails are read by government agencies. Not exactly a friendly country reading politically sensitive information.
You'd think these guys had PA's who check these things. Rather than sending this stuff off into the blue and hoping for the best |

Indeed. We believe they found his data from the charitable organisation that he had previously volunteered with, which was organising the function to celebrate the retirement of one of their top executives. He had to go through security checks, etc. and I was invited as his ‘plus one’, but unfortunately, I was ill.
The concern is not only how they have his data, but how they could send out an invitation to someone with the same name, without checking if it was the correct person? He could have been a terrorist, for instance!

Exactly bit too much self righteous indignation really. Surely people do not use their personal/work emails for kink!? I think Hellfire have reacted pretty well to their mistake."
Blame the victim, nice. They take money, they are a business, they have a responsibility to those who they take money from. If the local council cock up, they are reprimanded. So should a club, it’s was easily avoidable, it wasn’t some kind of sophisticated attack by Russian intelligence, |

If a club expects someone to show photo ID and proof of address as most clubs do as a condition of membership I'm not sure why it's odd that a normal email address would be used (a work one would be idiotic but not for the reason you imply), I expect clubs that I am members of to treat all my personal info confidentially not some of it.
I agree and have already said the club's response is admirable. Suggesting it could have been avoided if people used a different email smacks of victim blaming and completely misses the point of why GDPR exists |

Anyone with any sense will use alias’s in their email. I do not suggest that the ‘victim’ is to blame, but really, what victim are we actually talking about?! Unlike The Conservative Party leaking details of the New Years Honours list, this has been dealt with pretty honourably |

The New Years honours list was “leaked” inadvertently by the Cabinet Office which is a government department and not the Conservative Party. |

Indeed, but it is always better to take some personal responsibility. Again, Hellfire have done everything right after the mistake. Let he (or she), who has not made a mistake cast the first stone... |

I think it is the club who should take responsibility for the cock up which they seem to have done no matter what e-mail address a person uses.
I was more asking a general question of is that what people do, give their own personal e-mail address rather then a non descript one |

What about personal responsibility for the previous slur? |

I do hope no one involved is adversely affected by this, but understand their worry. Mistakes, unfortunate as this, can happen. It sounds like Hellfire has acted as swiftly as they could to rectify and minimise any harm.
We haven't been to the club (yet) but have registered previously, as far as we are aware, we haven't been affected. From what we understand from others, this is a well run and friendly club and is on our list to visit in 2020. HNY to all x
"For those complaining vehemently about this unfortunate mistake, I can sympathise but it’s a mistake that has been acknowledged, dealt with and apologised for.
B&J x"

"Cut the club some slack.
Very good of the club to publicly apologise "
Agreed |

No way, it’s disgusting! Not good enough at all
They have apologised and taken steps to minimise the damage by asking recipients to delete the email.
What else do you want them to do?
I doubt they run a high profit business where they can offer everybody financial compensation.
Well done hell fire club for holding your hands up and apologising. Many would have spun it with a jackanory story.
I like the club's response.
No fluff. No excuses. No miss direction.
Fingers crossed there's no damage done to the recipients or to the club."
Agreed and fingers firmly crossed that no one including the club will be impacted |

"Minimised damage?? By sharing personal email addresses and breaking trust of its members? Confidentiality and trust are at the heart of swinging so no, not good enough. If my email had been on that list there would be hell to pay!
You've never made an honest mistake have you.
I don't see what else they can do. And I'm willing to bet they'll move heaven and earth to make sure it doesn't happen again.
Maybe a public hanging will satisfy you.....
No I’ve never revealed details of 150+ members of a swinging club A public hanging? That’s a tad dramatic even for fab
Ooooh public hanging? By the scrotum "
Can we make it a private hanging and not compound the problem please x |

"Sorry I see this differently. On my old account I got stalked and in the end the police took control thankfully it's over and he was arrested.
Guess what he got my address from and email through the IP address of the email I sent. My whole family found out what things I got up to. The whole thing was very upsetting. So for those of you who think this is not serious I just hope nothing bad comes of this. Pleased I'm not a member"
Sorry to hear that it must have been horrible. Fingers crossed that no one will have to suffer the same issues off the back of this |

UPDATE:
We reported ourselves to the ICO within 4 hours of the incident and sent apologies with request to delete within 45 minutes.
The ICO have adjudicated and there is No Further Action Required. Anyone who wishes to see the adjudication, please contact us.
There have been posts and direct mailings regarding mass email providers which are GDPR compliant; we use Vertical Response for all general marketing and they are compliant. On this occasion, we were sending a reminder, re NYE, to a small group of friends and members, the list unfortunately contained 3 people who were neither.
We do not minimise the potential dangers to people, having their email address disseminated deliberately or inadvertently and reiterate our apologies to those affected.
I want to thank the numerous Fab members, and our own, who have been very supportive and also take this opportunity to say thanks to the near capacity crowd at New Years Eve; it was a fantastic night!
Happy New Year.

I’m sure there’s lessons in there for everyone. The ICO say no further action needed, club will share the notice.
Hopefully no one will be compromised by the breech. If they are the club will hopefully cover your legal costs under the public liability element / or other sections of their insurance policy.
I’ve been once and it won’t put me off going again.
I use proton email for swinging. |

I think the matter was handled very quickly and reported to the relevant authorities shortly after the breach was reported.
Could have went the opposite way.
Good effort folks
