First Swingers Club in the UK?
Jump to: Newest in thread
Hi all,
We were just wondering when the first-ever swingers club was opened in the UK. We did see it mentioned in the media that it was 1999, but we are sure that there must have been an earlier one than that! xxx |

Am sure the Roman’s were first to open their doors to a bit of swinging |

Eureka was a naturists club, along with SilverLee etc not a swingers club. Reasonably sure that Xtasia, plus one other club, not sure which, ended up in High Court overturning the old "House of illrepute" law in England, allowing clubs to become legal here. Also explains why not legal in Scotland and N Ireland.
Personally joined Xtasia during their days in Kidderminster, guessing around 1992 |

Probably even before then its just a matter of what labels people give things. |

"That's what the forum (another Roman reference) needs, more postings in Latin !! Tho I do hear that Boudica was a bit of a goer !!!Wasn't that one of your first veri's "
Now that's an idea !!! Verifications from famous people in history.

Early 1990's would be about right. Even then, there was Adam & Eve's and The Boardroom in Manchester, and The Toucan Club roaming around London (it wasn't a fixed venue), so there were others...
And before that, don't forget the antics that went on in the horny porny cinema clubs, and other "X-Certificate" cinemas, that were all the rage before VHS-at-home killed them off. |

I wonder if there is an archive of old News of the World back-issues. If there was a club to run an exposee on they would have found it. Just need to start a search in or around 1992 and work backwards lol |

"There was Xanadu in Manchester many moons ago...I think that may have predated Adam and Eve's which I think is the current oldest club in the Northwest.
Not sure about the rest of the country? "
As far as I'm aware Adam & Eve was the first proper swinger club in the UK.
It opened in 1982 and I first visited the place in late '87/early '88 and for a while was quite regular in there, both as a single guy and as a couple.
In those days it was owned by Dave & Sue who went on to open Cupids, and it was Irish Tony who pretty much ran the place.
I first heard of the Boardroom in the early 90's and did visit quite a few times. What a dump that was but I, and a couple of lady friends, had some good fun in there.
Only visited Xanadu once in the late 90's and didn't like the place at all. It could be nip and tuck but I don't think it predates Adam & Eve. |

I think you find that there still no such illegal thing as ** a swingers club ** per sae.
That doesn't mean they are illegal. It means theres no set government approved box for their proper registration yet x
They are registered as private members only clubs and depending on the licenses they hold also effects their titles..
You may notice clubs dont actually call themselves ,swingers club in their name??
It's kind of a cult urban legend type layman term.. lifestyle club name seems to have taken over from sun clubs
Several of the main name clubs/ parties we know today started in the 60s and 70s
When you had to write to a PO Box on a postcard and wait several days to be return post accepted before being sent address.. it was avery secret society then.
How the internet has changed life

Back in the 1990's if you were a single guy, pretty much the only option that you had was to venture to Manchester.
You could go to the VIP Porn Cinema Club in the afternoon & early evening and then, to start with, you could go to Adam & Eve's. The Boardroom came along a little after Adam & Eve's.
There was a couple from the Boardroom who then set up another club with a Scottish guy (Jim, I think) Jim then set up Connections in Openshaw Not long after that someone had the bright idea of taking on the task of converting a huge nightclub into a swinging venue, branded "Xanadu". Xanadu was so big that you'd need a map & compass to find the next nearest people to you. They resorted to running events in partnership with the Sunday Sport just to fill the place up a bit, and that started it on its road to decline when the bond of confidentiality and trust was lost. |

Yes I only went there once but I remember that Xanadu was very big.
Thanks for the memory jog on Connections. I went there a couple of times with an ex GF but couldn't remember the name of the place. Just off Ashton Old Road if I remember correctly.
Boardroom was around for quite a few years but I'm pretty sure A&E predated it by more than a little. Because of who I was with at the time I can date it to '92 and again to '99 but I don't remember it from the 80's.
I'll never forget that crazy railway carriage connection between the bar and the playrooms. I think it connected two buildings and used to wobble as you went through it (health and safety would have a field day with that nowadays LOL) I think it finally closed in 2000/2001 when the building was condemned.
In the mid/late 90's swinger clubs seemed to be popping up all over the place in and around Manchester. I think it was one of the few places in the country that tolerated them at the time.

We were using BGHS in Brighton in the early 90s.. remember the excitement as your swinger magazine (20 pages of badly photocopied pages and illegible photos) dropped in its unmarked brown paper envelope through the door? |

"What about Chameleons, I always thought they were one of the trailblazers that must have been the 90’s when they opened "
Chameleons came later than you think.
Xtasia started life in the early 90's in tha basement of a wine bar in Kiddeminster, before moving to Bromsgrove. It operated a mixed Wednesday night and a couples only Saturday. Chameleons came on to the scene about then having been converted from a gay club. The old Roman God murals that were part of the gay club (the original Greenhouse) on the walls took a while to be redecorated there too. Xtasia then moved to West Bromwich, and after a little while the owners split up, with one couple setting up back at the Bromsgrove location, under a name I can't recall. It lasted there about 9 months. At about this time Ceasars in Warwickshire opened as did Utopia in Staffordshire and The Moorbarns in Leicestershire (now = Liberty Elite, having flirted with the identiy of "Liberations" for a while) Latterly, there was also a sauna club in Walsall that failed to make a mark too.
Yep they come and they go...but the good ones stay on. |

"Adam and eves opened in 1982. Does that make it oldest. Or at least oldest in Manchester. K"
It was certainly the first proper swinger club in the North West and I'm almost certain the UK.
This thread has been running for over a week now and other than an odd naturist club with extras no-one has come up with anything that predates it. |

Yes - I think you are right. I am sure there would have been underground parties, events and naturist clubs but as a permanent place for swinging this has got to be the first. I wonder if the people who first opened the club are still around?

They could be but they will certainly be getting on a bit.

Last I heard was that they had retired to Spain, but that was around 20 years ago. Not heard anything about them since. |
