Birkenhead/Liverpool

Hey folks!

Following on from the success of our foodbank, which is still doing well by the way, we are looking to expand our 'paying it forward' ethos, by introducing another initiative which will hopefully help a lot of needy people and it doesn't have to cost you anything.

We have become a collection point for unused/unwanted medical supplies. As you know, I used to be a health professional and I was part of an initiative who collected medical items and we arranged for it to be shipped abroad.

Well I am using my old contacts to do something similar again. All you need to do is bring in your unwanted/unused items (see below) when you visit us and give them to whoever is on the desk. I will keep the items and arrange for a courier to pick up the items once a month.

The items will be going to hospitals and emergency crisis centres in Africa where they need all the help they can get. Each centre has a specific shortage of certain items and they fill in a 'remittance' of items they are short of...the items we donate will then be sent to where it is needed to avoid wastage.

The stuff that is accepted is quite surprising and you may just have things lying around in your medicine cupboard, unused.

The medicines accepted are below. Tablets must be in full strips and in their original box and tubes/sprays need to be unopened to meet the World Health Organisation guidelines. They also need to have at least 15 months left on them until they expire:

Antibiotics/Antibacterials

Antifugals and Antivirals

Sulphonamides

Bronchodilators (inc unused inhalers)

Iron and vitamin tablets

Analgesics/Anti inflammatories, i.e. paracetamol, ibuprofen

Antacids and ulcer healing drugs

Anti-hypertensives and diuretics

Antihistermines

Steroid tablets and creams

Ear/eye drops and ointments

Anti-depressants and Anti-psychotics

Nitrates and Digoxin

Local Anaesthetics

Creams and ointments (i.e. savlon, germaline)

Oral Anti diabetic meds

Anti epileptics and Anti-malarials

Surgical items - Should be in their sealed packets and with 15 months left until they expire:

Swabs, gauze, dressings, plasters (all types)

Theatre masks, shoe covers

Bandages (all types)

Butterfly stitches

Giving sets and cannulae

Sutures of any kind

Maternity/sanitary pads

Neck collars/wrist braces

Any surgical instruments that are sealed in packets

Glove (latex and non latex in sealed boxes or packets)

Scissors in sealed packs

Needles and syringes in sealed packets

There are some medicines and surgical items that I can't send, i.e. codeine, tramadol, IV fluids...if you are unsure if I can accept something, just PM me.

So for you, it's easy!!! Just look through your medicine cupboard and see if there's anything on our list and within the 15 months, then pass it over on your next visit; I will do the rest.

Thanks in advance for your support and don't forget our food bank if you want to clear out your cupboards for spring, just bring it in with you...tinned food, dried food, cereals etc...!

xx
