Sex Discrimination

I have been a member of Liberty Elite as a single male. Last Friday speaking to the owner I have been informed that he plans to turn the club for couples only. Can he abruptly terminate the single male memberships? I am not a solicitor but I think according to the Equality Act 2010 it appears to be on the grounds of sex discrimination. Something similar to that BB in Cornwall that refused to have a gay couple as guests who take the hotel to court and had the discrimination case ruled at their favour.

Any advice on this?

This has been done to death. Whether it does or doesn't apply is a mute point as no one has ever challenged it anyway.

I am against clubs that charge extortionate rates for single men but in no way are the club discriminating.

sex discrimination covers a few areas. Gender sexual.orientation ie gay which is what the b and b case was about.

This club you refer to are just refining their rules.

What they should do is give you proportinate refund of any membership fees paid.

Whilst not knowing the club involved clubs use fees for single chaps as a cash cow and unless they charge couples more if sticking to only couples their profits could suffer which wont be a bad thing.

Now if a gay couple whether all male or all female are refused then that can fall under sex discrimination.

But if you are just a single unattached male then you will struggle but if they allow single females then you will have a case.

The rules are different for private members clubs, that's how they can charge different fees for different genders.

But it's not sexual discrimination, if they are changing there rules to couples only I can't see where this is discrimination against your gender as males and females would be allowed in equal measure assuming the couples are male/female

I think many couples do want single guys so totally excluding them could lose business too

As far I am aware they are still going to have single females membership what might be a case of sex discrimination.

You may have a point if that is correct bit why not just go to a club where you are welcome rather than a club where you are not

You have a point plenty of clubs out there Attic, Chams, Paradise, Jaydees . On the other hand, the owner could have told newish members about his plans

When a single guy comes through the door they are very quick to get the 100 quid membership fees...

A private club can legally choose whoever it's members.

Does seem a strange decision but it's a members club with a licence so it's up to him who he wants through the door.

We are members of Libs ourselves and thought they had the right balance in Singles and couples nights. We quickly grew tired of going Friday night as we did not have one clear night of someone overstepping the mark and witnessed some very bizarre behaviour from both couples and Singles so we simply went on a Saturday.

It's a brave decision that's for sure I wonder what they have planned for Fridays.

it is not against the law because the same act you are enquirying about actually does allow for positive discrimination for those sections of people that are under-represented..

so all a club would have to do if someone was to push it would be to charge the same amount for a couple/single ladies as they do single bloke... watch those figures plummet... and then they can show cause...

but thanks for playing anyway....

Excellent. I'll scrub libs off my list then.

I won't go where single men arnt allowed.

Odds on that changes within months though. Just like partners couples only nights. The couples didn't turn up

as for turning it into a couples only club... I assume they would be able to change the terms and conditions to there club... and in a sense a club would always have "ROAR" (Rights Over Admission Reserved)

if you have paid for a yearly membership, then I would assume they would have to give you back part of that money for the time you would no longer be a member.....pro rata at least!

I don't think they have anything special planned for Fridays the owner just believe that by turning into a excusive club for couples he will increase the numbers!!!

As one of several swing clubs within a sensible travelling distance in that part of the world, and given the number of people remarking that couples only nights are always on a Saturday, being couples only on a Friday may well be a sensible decision. If it does not damage their current Saturday night crowd then it could be a good move.

As a commercial venture it is the owners decision to make and live with. Anything that increases customer choice is to be applauded.
