New York is nowhere near as swinging as you'd think. I'm told that most of the places are "off-premises" - that is you socialise in the club but go back to somebody's home to play.
there might well be but I've never found them! back in the pre-AIDS days the city was wild (a club called Plato's Retreat was infamous); nowadays I think it's calmed down a lot.
