Does any one know if there has been researched a compiled a history of UK swingers clubs.
When was the first one, which current one is the oldest and how have clubs evolved?
This sounds like topic for a social scientist or social historian. Does amy one know if academic papers or articles have been written about this? |

Tbh Cupids and Rio’s has been around a long time I think I went in 2004/5
I am sure that partners and Adam and eves / chams has been around a similar kind of time as well
I know a few of the London clubs have closed, similar to sex cinemas.
The ones that have closed - club lick, f club London, st James in London. Amours and Xanadus in Manchester, garden of Eden in Leicester. La chambre in Sheffield.

Chaos was open and well established by 2005, so it would have been earlier.
You could call the original Hellfire Club, based in an excavated cave as you leave West Wycombe on the A40 a swingers club....it was certainly a party place with lots of fun occurring in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
The site is free and can be visited if anyone is interested but it will only take 10 minutes to glance into to view the individual cave rooms and what is left of the adornments. |

I hope others will know better, but I think the tough answer is no, this important book doesn’t exist!
In case you’re nerding out (I’ve done my fair share), there are some interestingly related discussions in: Lee Jackson, Palaces of Pleasure; Evelyn Lord’s Hell-Fire Clubs; some stuff here and there in Deborah Lutz, Pleasure Bound: Victorian Sex Rebels; and Kate Lister’s Cutious History of Sex.
But nothing direct about history of swing clubs as far as I know. Would love to discover otherwise…
Recently someone made a podcast called Time Capsule: the Silver Chain, which talks about an old ‘70s swingers club….and it highlights how important it is to GET THESE STORIES DOWN before they are lost to time. I see it a lot here in UK, too— the people who actually know first hand how things have changed in last decades are getting older and sometimes not passing on what they know… we’re gonna lose these histories (and historical perspective on where we’ve been and where we’re going) if we’re not careful.
Hmm. Happy hunting for these horny histories!! xxx |

When asked what did the Romans ever do for us..could orgies be added..
Or did the pagan celts introduce orgies to the Romans..?
Wasn't there a documentary about the one in Sheffield, la chmabre on TV years ago..?
Not so much private clubs...but the upper classes have been swinging for decades if not centuries if you think of their pre war country house weekend parties.. |

"Think one of the oldest ,certaonley in manchester/salford was The boardrooms late 70s i believe zanadu was another on bridge st"
Yep xanadus was at the start of my time in the scene I think it closed not long after I joined
I mean if you were swinging in 80s, you will be likely to be in your 60s or 70s now. I don’t know if some or these people would still be swinging or even mention what they did back then
All I know about the time was people met through contact mags and shared poloroids. It never has occurred to me in the pre Internet agar how did you have a swingers party, how would you contact each other???
I supposed it probably went by word of mouth or a couple had a private Filofax

For those interested, I'd recommend three - relatively short -books by Barry Calvert
Barry, along with his wife Marie owned La Chambre, in Sheffield
The books are funny and do help to give an idea of what swinging was like before the day of the world wide Web!
These days people can access sexual encounters by the click of a mouse
Pre-internet days it was a fairly long process as people relied on adverts in contact magazines, creating po boxes, writing letters, exchanging photos and then arranging meets
Barry explains that it could sometimes take months to finally meet up in person
He also stated that people would think nothing of driving for 3+ hours!
He stated that this was one of the reasons for opening his own swingers safe space - La Chambre
It's a really interesting read but it shows that some things havent progressed at all
The majority of local authorities are still making life hell for venue owners and even though its not as bad as it was back then, swinging is still often seen as something only deviants do!
His books are also really funny, with some stories of good and bad meets ... his encounter with a dog is hysterical

Thank you for a brilliant and well informed reply. Do you know the titles of the books? |
