Why are there so few clubs?
Jump to: Newest in thread
I don’t understand why the clubs are concentrated in the same places. Why does tiny Torquay area have 3, London has dozens yet Bristol barely has one now, especially when in the past it had lots. Surely it should be like pubs. Most people have sex just like most people drink, shouldn’t there be a club in every city? The stigma of an alternative lifestyle has long since vanished, I can’t imagine villagers with pitchfork objecting (even in Bristol where the pitchforks are abundant nearby). There are massage brothels all over and no-one bats an eye.
Just wondering out loud. |

I don't understand why they need a licence. Surely it's a private members club. The fact the members are horny, dirty fuckers is irrelevant. It's not like there's entertainment provided like a lapdancing club. |

Since 2012 there has been a generic "sexual entertainment license" that covers strip clubs and swingers clubs. These licenses are issued by local councils discretion. The venue has to apply for a seperate drinks license to serve alcohol. |

"Some councils won't license them e.g. York"
Exactly this...
Increasingly more difficult to get a sexual entertainment licence for clubs, saunas, cinema etc.The safety and exploitation of Women is seen as a factor. |

Local councils and different police forces interpret rules differently…. That was why for example a swinging club could and do exist in for example Tyne and Wear, and County Durham, but don’t exist on Teesside or Cumbria where the councils and police force shutdown anything within weeks of opening |

Nil Caps happen all over, including in 10 London Boroughs. Swansea. Bristol. Most of Scotland. SEV Licences are in the main arbitrarily released under the guidance of each local authority borough. 'No discretion to do so' is also a part of the local authority power. They literally vote yes or no, using their ability to do so under the Law. It can be challenged, some have lost (Liverpool) some have won (Scotland) No challenges have changed all cases for all applications.
Essentially, local councillors are deciding your public sexual entertainment - as a matter of NIMBY politics using available Law.

It’s a bit crazy bearing in mind if it was a private house anything can happen.
You can rent a huge AirBnB share the costs and have a lot of fun.
But that’s a party and not a premises.
Answer? Buy an old pub with rooms.
Advertise it as an adult only hotel. Make the bedrooms kinky and watch the travellers arrive and room numbers get swapped. |

I was told when a new club tries to open, often other clubs/owners petition against their licence so as to lessen any competition. i also hear som eeven worse practices are put in place to halt the compition getting a foothold |

Except, hotels need a license to operate. I'm fairly certain that if you tried to get around the rules then the council would find a way to close you down quite quickly, who would risk a lot of money on such a venture? |

Indeed. A Hotel Licence is just as onerous as an SEV licence, too. |

The SEV form is very specific in venues that have paid performers, or if the main entertainment is a cinema showing pornographic content. So if it's just playroom where the public choose to have sex, that doesn't need a license. Interpretation from different authorities shouldn't matter. If they try to shut you down they would have to prove you had paid strippers, masseuses or just a cinema. |

Oh. We'll throw ours away then. Fancy that, paying it each year for 13 years.

I just read the form, Stafford Council however may not operate on logic or reasoning |

2.4 The above list is not exhaustive and, as the understanding of the exact
nature of these descriptions may vary, should only be treated as
indicative. Ultimately, decisions to licence premises as sexual
entertainment venues shall depend on the content of the entertainment
provided and not the name it is given.
This is the bit where LA's interpret Swingers clubs as Sexual Entertainment Venues. |

It’s actually against air bnb rules to hold a party in their properties. These days they enforce the rules. You can be asked to leave and or police called. |

It's deliberately vague so they can refuse without any specific reason. It's bullshit Council jibber jabber. |

"I am still getting ahead around London having dozens of clubs. It may be half dozen if you include the Greater London area."
I should have counted before I vaguely said dozens. I just looked in the list on Fab and there are 12 listed in the Greater London area. Which is great. I wish other cities had such a choice. Like pubs, you’re going to get some that are better than others so choice is nice. |

Venues - there really aren't many legal ones due to the licensing. Local councils are constantly in battles with some of the bigger London sex positive events over it. A fixed club is a rare thing in London. There's definitely dozens of events and parties here, they just move around. |

4 fixed clubs and the rest are events. Torture Garden is not a swinging event and BMFC is no longer in London. So 4 sites for 8 million people (I cant find the adult population figure). |
