I went to Insomnia on a Thursday night on my own
I wore black trousers and smart dark grey shirt and pre booked an event in the basement - they have an upstairs bar too
Arrived 30 mins after opening but was told the event already had too many single males but could go upstairs (cost a bit more)
Basement event was packed. upstairs was empty but filled up with around 20 people and as it was quiet it was easy to chat to people
After I headed to Kit Kat where I had prepaid for two tickets to a party to the promoter via Instagram - on entry they objected to my shirt but were fine for me to inflict my hairy chest on the young party goers - this party was more of a DJ techno party so danced till the small hours but hard to chat/engage in fun - jam packed young crowd

Dark clothes add to the chic, street-wise look of young people in the city. It's more tradition now than anything though. That dates back to the late 80s early 90s when many of the famous super clubs appeared.
Berlin wall was being ripped down. Techno, EBM, what would later become Trance [although this is more the Frankfurt sound] as well as for east Germans, western music that previously could only be heard illigally; became to represent freedom,liberty, tollerence and self expression.
A sub group of people wanted to appear edgy. Black is Powerful, edgy, sleek and strong; it's an understated shade that creates a statement.
Many kulterhaus were simply reflecting their favourite music acts none the less. It's impact on the Berlin techno scene that still persists.
Black is often combines with some edgy accessories (auffallend).
Although wearing black is a good and safe choice, being unique and staying true to yourself (bleib dir treu) is also highly encouraged.
There is also a practical reason for black. After the Berlin wall fell the no means land between original wall became fertile ground for illegal raves. Wearing black allows for greater chance of not being spotted in case the Feds cause you to do a runner by breaking up your underground party. It also mates sweate less visable, Raves get hot normally wearing less cloths is better practically.
From a modern day POV. Tradition combined with a techno sub culure and an industrial athletic are reasons for all the gothic black.
But I'm not German so maybe someone who is from Berlin and/or German is better at explaining. |

not alot is open to all by this i mean alot and i do mean alot is underground but when you find it well lets just say wow..
best advice do you searching and homework before you go its not like Amsterdam or Hamburg as open but its far more kinky and hardcore in the flesh as in people not media |

We can’t help as we visited Kit Kat during the day just for a nosey - we crammed so much in we were too knackered for any fun 
A great city though with fantastic transport links. I wish we were going back!!!

So sure wedding a video about EBM (ELECTRIC BODY MOVEMENT) of the late 80s had an impact on let's wear all black techno scene. EBM is a form of electronica rock music, where one replaces the guitars with synths and the percussion is shared between drums and drum machines.
Anyway the asthetics of EBM inspired or grew with Berlin's vergening BDSM and gay scenes as well as inspiring techno and early trance music. Basically the asthetic was an edgy way of saying fuck you to to their communist and fascist forefathers.
Anyway one 90s gay sex club Osgut and it's party Snax in 2004 would evolve into the techno club Berghrain.

I'm going to write a club review. But basically it was a totally different experience. Being able to dance the night away and also people getting off around me.
Put it this way a lot of things happened in KitKat that simply would either not be able happen in the UK because of law but also the type of clientele. |

I'm going to write a club review. But basically it was a totally different experience. Being able to dance the night away and also people getting off around me.

Hope its ok if I very, very politely and respectfully correct you and inform any interested readers that Berlin's KitKat is most definitely a swinger's club. People have sex in there, at night anyway.
I would agree it has an element of kink/fetish to it but that's more the clientele rather than the club itself. Where the confusion often arises is that they do have a loose "must wear black" rule on the door but, especially at weekends when the club is very popular, there are often huge queues to get in so many "dress up" in outlandishly sexy gear and lavish costumes to gain favour (and they hope earlier entry) with the door staff.
Some of the guests really do look amazing!
Inside it definitely has that huge "night club" feel with large dancefloors playing mainly banging EBM (think goth rock meets techno if you not familiar with this genre) and many do go to just dance or pose or go on the pull like every other night club on the planet. It is easy to frequent the KitKat and not be a swinger. That is true.
But away from the dance floors people have sex in there. A lot of it too. They most certainly swing! And literally anything goes. There is a lot of both straight and gay sex as well as any/all kinks, fetishes, specialities you can think of. Even ones you might not have!
I would say to anyone thinking of going by all means go for it but be prepared for it being so popular as it is so famous. If you are going to Berlin but want a more "same as UK swinger clubs" experience then there are umpteen others in the city to choose from. If you like the sound of the KitKat - as in banging gothy-techno music, dark clothing but still places to have sex may I suggest looking at Insomnia as its a smaller version of the KitKat in a way.

I agree with you that to me any way. Swingers clubs and sex clubs are the same thing.
Alas though when speaking to people at KitKat many did but see themselves as swingers. A) because they had a traditional understanding of what it bent to be a swingers i.e. wife swapping
B) some were singles looking to explore there first sex club (maybe this was the back up option). |

Another vote for Insomnia, albeit, we last attended on a Saturday, five years ago. It was our first experience of a swinging club after just attending fetish clubs and prompted us to join this site. There was no queue despite the place being rammed. Mostly people were dancing to techno though there was some sex going on just off the dance floor. We had no issues getting in despite being middle aged (me much more so), though she was 6 months pregnant, half naked with a collar and lead, which even by Berlin standards, must carry some novelty value for jaded door staff. There was a mezzanine level with lots of huge beds for couples only which was where most of the sex was going on. Lots of it in fact, all the beds being occupied by multiple couples at one point. The most shocking thing for us though was the smoking area which was a big glass box inside the club with doors that seemed to let all the smoke into the club. |
