Hi all!

Wasn't quite sure how best to title this, but I'm a wheelchair user (weak legs after an accident some years back) that would love to check out some clubs.

The main issue is I don't always know how easily I can get around a building (narrow doorways/small bathrooms/steps are my mortal enemy!) so my best bet is going there to see for myself.

I would particularly like to check out the Hellfire club, and due to work I'm only really able to go on weekends.

I was wondering if a) any wheelchair users have been and what their experience was; and b) if any lovely women in a similar boat would be willing to accompany me just to check it out (a little nervous to just show up on my own first time).

Apologies if asking this is poor etiquette - not super familiar with the rules!

Not a lot of places in general are wheelchair friendly(my own experience too). Also a part time wheelchair user

We have only ever seen a wheelchair user at eureka and that was a while back, hellfire has steep stairs up to the main part of the club and so does ab fabs. VA is on one level so that may be an option but I couldn’t say 100%, your best bet is to contact the clubs and ask as they are all really friendly and helpful.

I've seen a wheelchair user at VA. There us a slope access into the club. The toilets are unisex and quite open. Don't remember a disabled toilet specifically. Couples room is up a step. Most is 1 level. Message the club for clarification

I would hope that if you contacted a club in advance they’d let you in for a bit of a reconnaissance mission earlier in the day before the club opened so you could assess it for access. That way you could plan a visit for another time maybe and know where was easier to get to and where you’d need some support to get to within the play areas. Love your profile and really hope you manage to get a club visit sorted x

Very few. Quest in Leeds is the only truly accessible club we're aware of.

We’re big fans of Hellfire as those who know us will appreciate.

The club areas downstairs are easily accessible but to be fair, the main part of socialising happens upstairs in the lounge and bar. There are also playrooms and toilets upstairs.

The steps are steep and just a standard width but do have railings each side.

The club is super friendly and would no doubt welcome you but access would be the issue.

If we are going we would be happy to show you around and Just is big enough to help with access.

Thanks so much for the response! I think the only way I could get upstairs were if I was carried up, which may be quite difficult as I'm quite tall. Also don't want to put anyone's back out before they have any fun!

I'd still love to check it out though! Do you know if there are any toilets downstairs? I think as long as I can access a bathroom I should be fine.

Amazing pictures by the way, you guys look an amazing couple!

What's your upper body strength like? It is possible to pull oneself upstairs in a chair (if you're strapped in and there's handrails). Obviously recommend someone behind you just in case. I keep meaning to try doing it myself. In theory, you can also get back down, although that looks more scary

Thanks..

There are toilets upstairs and downstairs at Hellfire..

the main problem would be that drinks and bar and socialising is mainly done upstairs.

Not insurmountable, just a challenge to work out the best way.

Being a wheelchair user doesn't automatically mean you need a hoist to get into a hot tub or pool. But other than Quest, which advertises itself as adapted for wheelchair users, we understand, no other club has design features to cater to disabled people.

There is a club in Sutton which is in a large Victorian style house.

The dungeon, lounge, bar area are downstairs, it does also have a small toilet downstairs too. residential.

Has one play room which you have to book but might be a possibility?

My upper body strength is good but ashamed to say I've never tried pulling myself upstairs! Just have visions of tumbling head first down them :D

I could bump myself up the stairs I suppose but might take me a while. Something I'll definitely consider though.

If you don't mind a PM, I can suggest some sites that have "how to" videos of such crazy activities? Yes, I'm completely barmy and do bonkers things in my chair

Do you know if there are playrooms downstairs and if not is play allowed in the downstairs club areas?

Various organisers hold parties there. House of Poitier, HKOP.

Thinking about it… it’s a gravel drive and there are two of three steps leading up to the house. Would you be able to go with a friend to assist?

Once your in, I think you’d be fine

I should be OK with the gravel drive and I think I should navigate a couple of steps with the help of two people.

Thanks so much for the recommendation, will definitely be checking it out!

The play areas downstairs are couples only but the staff are lovely and I’m sure they would be happy to make an exception! If u go on a dungeon night most people will be downstairs anyway so may be a good time to try it out!

Most we've been to/read about have loads of stairs just to get inside or to get to the main play spaces. These are surely not accessible?

For you information, I have seen a wheelchair user at both The Vanilla Alternative (near St Neots) and The Annex (near Kings Lynn). There were issues with steps BUT lots of helping hands and the guy seemed to be having a good time.

I think his wheelchair use was actually a bit of a positive- an icebreaker / conversation starter.

I think there is a fine line between being accessible and fully accessible. I think most clubs make an effort to help where they can.

The OP is about wheelchair access and his profile describes having no use of his legs. I'm going to suggest steps are (unless someone is willing to carry him up), a inaccessible situation.

There's no difference between accessible/fully accessible. If you can't get in through the front door...

Also, there are no discounts for only being able to access a small part of a club, if you're restricted to one floor of a three floor establishment, that's also hardly accessible either. Plus loo and changing issues, if one cannot stand unaided.

I'm disable and use a wheelchair but I can just get by on crutches in a club I go to quest in Leeds which is owned by a wheelchair user,

The beds are quite high do not easy to transfer onto and the hot tub is a no no unless you get help getting into it.

That is the only club I know that is accessible to my knowledge

Well I hope you don't do anything too strenuous in the lovely clubs you visit. I'm sure these establishments are equipped with defibrillators and have medically trained staff.

It isn't me who has heart failure. And anyone could be taken ill with a medical emergency, at any time. I'm sure the person with heart failure will pace themselves.

Perhaps a quick shufti at the NHS page on heart failure might educate?
