He means that when someone says something to him in chat, he goes to look at their profile before deciding how to reply. But by the time he has looked at their profile, the chat screen has moved on, and he can no longer see the comment that he is replying to. Scrolling back up the chat room isn't possible, as every new line of chat makes the chat room jump forwards to the end.

Maybe it simply reflects real life:
Lady catches your eye in a bar and say's 'Hi Sexy Fella'. You dash to her house, look at a few pics on her walls, check out her knicker drawer and box of toys, dash past her [wanking] hubby and by the time you return to the bar she's gone. |
