The ones changed over a year ago may be but the recent conversions are classed as 'Van's with windows'. Ours was a professional conversion that was classed as a motorcaravan, previously I converted a van and then unregistered it as a motor caravan.

Not sure if the regulations have changed but you had to send photo proof of to DVLC ( if I remember correctly) , of the conversion to show it has fixed units and a fixed bed and not just a mattress thrown in a works van before they would re register it as a motor home .

i thought as much , say i buy a converted van from a company for £25,000 and its registered as a van with windows how do i come off with insurance ?

Reply privately (closed, thread got too big)

By (user no longer on site)  over a year ago

Dvla have made it really difficult to reregister a van as a camper, they like you to have hi top camper decals in addition to the internal fitments you will also need windows either side (whether its 2 either side or 1 is open to interpretation....) at least 1 needs to be an opener.

All of the above is at the discretion of the person looking at the application and covering letter.....

Insurance companys know about the difficulty in re registering and some are making allowances for this.

My van was built to the old regs, I was in the process of sorting the pics and cover letter when it changed so i made a few phone calls to the dvla and the advice I was given was to submit and they will evaluate based on their interpretation of the submission

So my interpretation of this is that unless you tick all the boxes they won't look at it!!!!

T4s and 5s are very practical and reliable if you buy right. You can have a van and fit caravelle seats that are on mushroom bolts so you can remove them in seconds

Depends all on what you want from it. Im going back 9 years and bought my bog standard t4 for 800ish. Spent a lot more doing it up. Only thing I didn't make was the bed and windows. Rest I bought and fitted myself. Id rather do that as its more enjoyable than giving someone cash to do something you can do. Suspension is an absolute doddle!

T3/t25 rot. Unless you spend loads, you'll find rot in the seams. Had two, one was great body wise but fucked engine, other was the other way round

No matter which you go for, buy condition rather than what it has on it... it's cheaper to buy accessories than it is to repair rot and replace broke big bits

Have they been open?

Hope you're not one of many I've seen screwed over by dodgy vw specialists

"I like the idea of having it so it has removable rear seats so I can use it for work and fit a sheet of plasterboard in the back, but then at weekends quite easily fit a rock and roll seats to turn into a bed in case I get tired lol"

I love my T5 to bits, my only gripe is that even with the seats out of the back,an 8*4 sheet of plasterboard wont fit laying down, so I have a full Rhino roof rack, to which is now fitted a 3m Fiamma Awning.

T3 and nowhere to go.....

The older T25/3 had more space even with the engine in the back.

Had a t4 and once the bed was folded down, wasn't much space. Never christened it.

Just been past Cannock woods.plenty of people driven there and headed off for a walk.

Yea t5 has been amazing for apart from the common maintaining and bits and bobs, I just want to be able to stand in and have a bit more room to move, plus I want to start another conversion

Sounds good!! I've almost had all three of your vehicles. I swapped my t4 for a MK1 Jetta. Had a 73 bug

Damn. The last T25 was rotten but ran well. That's the reason I jumped to the T4. Was my daily
