I’ve only owned an R65GS, ( Ex French Police training bike) and never had the licence to legally use it so sold it on, but now I’m on track to getting my licence I’m really keen on owning an old BMW twin. Opinions on the old BMWs from anyone welcome.

I've had an R100s for twelve years. It's a great bike. Can cover a lot of miles in surprisingly little time. Takes a bit of getting used to but it's worth it. Easy to maintain and very dependable. Upgrade the regulator and rectifier. Other than that just enjoy it. I'd recommend them.

How old though? I've always thought the R1100S was a nice looking bike, better than the 1200 that followed it IMO, although the 1200 was more advanced & probably handled better.

Any old "air head" bar the four fifty will be a very well made, high quality bike with a surprising turn of speed.

The R90s is now quite a sought after model and fetches silly money.

The R80/7 and R100s are the best "cooking models" IMHO.

Great advice about the four fifty. I didn’t know that. Was thinking about an old police R80/7 to cut my teeth on.

I had an old R80/7 ex police bike and was glad to see the back of it.

Anything BMW commands a premium price and that includes basics like oil filters. I was talking to a local dealer 2 weeks ago who had an old Beemer in for a service. He phoned the local BMW dealer for an oil filter and was quoted £28. He found out that the same filter fitted a VW Lupo and got one for under a fiver.

My R80 averaged 44mpg, my XJ900 averages 60mpg. Not only that but it starts, stops, is faster and more reliable than my old R80 airhead.

Anyone with an older Beemer that goes to BMW for service parts is to put it bluntly an idiot. There are three or four well known UK specialists who cater for them. One specialises in breaking them to keep better ones on the road. I find service parts are on par with the Jap stuff. Clutches are the biggest killer of older models as even if you get an Indy to do it you are looking at around £600 minimum as its so labour intensive. I've had my 26yr old K100 for several years now & never bought anything from BMW.

I’m from a family who have driven bmw boxers since my father used drive his big bore r69 he’s 80 now and drives a parallel twin f800gt, the r1200r was getting to heavy, I’ve an r1150gs and I’m a hard driver ( r1, ktm690smc,grom(laugh)) but I’ve had that gs 10 years , I’ve drifted round the main round about in my city , truthfully had the throttle pinned but a speedy was at the junction and seen me drifting a shaft drive gs around the roundabout, soon I say him I said I’m done for dangerous driving, but he came up to me and was what’s your excuse as he thought I couldn’t come up with one but I said my tyres were cold and he said.... and I quote i own a gs and I’ve never seen one do that and told me drive on... respect

Gotta love bike cops. They are almost human.

There's definitely something about the older BMWs. I've owned and sold on many other bikes, but I still have all 3 of my BMWs. Even my K100 which is a lemon. I'm now considering rebuilding it.

My best bike has to be my R1100R. Reliable, comfy on long distances and never let's me down.

I recently tried a new GS, but it's not the same. Computer displays, riding modes and detached from any real feel when riding.

Find Motorworks website, they sell airheads and K's, F's and they do a good number of spares both OEM and there own.

Currently I ride a 2006 R1200ST, lighter than the big tourers and its very pleasant to ride.

I’d say the r1200st is probably the most balanced and solid for the road, must take a spin off one... I’m in the proses of rebuilding my 02 r1150gs, I’m going to drop out the engine and get it heat treated black, I’ve r1150lt wheels, so it will change from a 19 front and 17 rear to a 17 inch rim front so I can put serious tires and a 17 inch 180/60 rear, I want to ditch the air box and use clip in air filters on the intake . I’d love to but a super charger I but at4000 pounds, but still it doubles in power but with that comes suspension and brakes to be sorted

The R850 r , although early models had issues with fuel injector covers, and white rust, the front paralever was fantastic , virtually no dive when breaking and cornering, brialliant turning circle, titchy tiny seat height. Sounds a bit like you feel a little unsure about a larger capacity, dont be , my choice would be the 1150 rs , go on !

Me too. I've had my K100 for 15 years, nothing much ever goes wrong and the biggest expenses were when I rode into a cow on it and wrecked the fairing! Oh, and the cow walked away unharmed...

I always lusted after a R100RS. Had a poster on my wall. Was really disappointed when

I got to ride one. Eventually ended up enjoying a ride on an R100 but I don't think I could have one as my main bike. Same with Ducatis. I love my Fireblade CBR 954 and am currently in Cap d'agde on it. Maybe I am too used to the ease of power of Jap 4 cylinder bikes?

My Dad has a K100RS-SE, R100RTmonolever and an R850R and he loves them.

I've just taken the plunge with a 1250GS and have to be honest and tell you guys that it's ace. That's coming from a die hard Ducati fan.

Those 1250 GS’s are mega, but I’m only 5’9 and I think they may be too big for me.

There's low seat and lowered suspension options for shorter folks.

I traded my FJR for this, had two of them in the last seven years. I loved them too but this thing is in another league.

The torque is stonking from the bottom end, that's just in road mode.

I've not tried dynamic yet!

Try a Royal Enfield Himalayan a quarter of the cost of the Beemer and just as capable AND you will never get another speeding ticket.

There’s a woman on YouTube who crossed half the world on one. Very impressive it was too.
