France proposed clampdown

The French government is proposing to clampdown on illegal immigrants!

People who have fake ID will get 5yrs in prison & 75,000€ fine. Those who have fake documents crossing the border will get 1 year. All will be deported after completing time.

Think they might need to build a few more prisons.

I suppose it may keep some of them away from dangerous dictatorship style led countries for a few years. Where they'd get the money to pay fines seems a little uncertain.

What's the betting that once arrested, they all claim asylum?

If they have fake documents they are gone.

As stated it's catching them, but bearing in mind here you are required by law to carry your ID card or have your passport with you if your national place of origin don't have ID cards. You may recall some years ago England fans being arrested in Belgium for not having passports with them.

When I first went to Belgium in the 1980s, you used to have a means of identification and a sum of money on you. Think it was 200 BeF?

Let's see if they actually deliver on what they've said. The French have been big on words and weak on actions in the past, particularly around problems with migrants loitering in Calais.

They are going to provide them all with rubber boats so they can sail to UK - YOU can then shoot them all on arrival!

You on about the idea of scrapping the Le Touquet deal and moving the UK border back to the UK? You make it sound like that would be a good thing?

Yes the equivalent of "rates" - reasoning behind it is foreigners own property but don't pay income tax which provides the infrastructure in the country. Yes they pay rates, and buy food etc when here but that doesn't pay for the roads etc.

Looks like some Brits (of whom have posted on this thread) will be paying more tax on their property in Cap d'Agde then.

"What if it's my only house in France.. ..whats the rules/terms"

If you are not registered in France and it is not your main residence (permanently residing in France and paying French impot [income tax] ) then you will be liable for any "surcharge ". Also for the future if you sell your second home after brexit, as a 3rd country your tax increases to 49% on the profit - an extra 20%. Finally I have just read that British drivers may have to have an International Driving Permit - depending on the deal when driving in Europe.

Heard about the international driving permit yesterday on sky news. It will be part of the upcoming negotiations, you say we may have to have them, then again we may not have to have them. Things could end up staying as they are with Driving licence's so no change there. Having to have international driving permits to drive in the EU is the worst case scenario and even then it's only a small form to fill in so it's no real biggie. This would also end up being a 2 way reciprocal arrangement where EU citizens coming to the UK would have to apply for an international driving permit before being allowed to drive on UK roads.

Phase 2 of the negotiations haven't started yet.

Phase 1 went pretty well for the UK as it happens, many things were agreed which are now being made legally binding. We agreed a divorce bill of between £35 and £39 billion pounds, no where near what remoaners said it would be. The jurisdiction of the ECJ has effectively been ended in the UK, reduced to a referral court for 8 years then after that it won't even be available for referral anymore. The UK Supreme court will be the final ruling court in the UK. We'll be leaving the single market and the customs union (in the phase 1 text) and we'll be ending EU free movement of people and making our own trade deals around the rest of the world.

Happy days

I said we'd pay nothing in the event of no deal! That is still the UK government position. If we leave with no deal then we don't pay a penny. The £35 - £39 billion divorce bill is only payable on a deal being reached.

Macron is not happy that foreign investors are buying French agricultural land. He says it's part of the country's infrastructure and is bringing in rules to stop it following Chinese acquisitions last year!

So things in france are that good the farmers are selling off land to foreign investers ?

Maybe the EU dream is not working there as well

No it's just that some have posted that M Macron does nothing and here is another example of action!

How you can "spin" that France is doing badly - they are the 5th largest economy in the world! Looking at the foreign investment/ownership in the UK which is currently cheap for foreign investers due to the fall in the pound, what is our government doing - most of the utilities are foreign owned. The French are building nuclear Power station paid for by Chinese and the consumer is the one who will be picking up the bill -later.

We sold our apartment at Babylones last year and really benefitted from the exchange rate. Seemed to time it just right as AGN have billed all the owners €7,000 to refit the apartments in time for the 2018 season... And now I hear this.

I guess we just look back at 12 good years in Cap.

it looks like an 'inward' type of populist policy, maybe not the right word..

all that will possibly happen is other countries who see their people being taxed abroad for this will levy the same on others..
